Citizenship and naturalization processes

This section presents the steps for two of the basic procedures for acquiring Greek citizenship, the second-generation citizenship and the naturalization of foreigners.

Second-generation citizenship:

Citizenship due to birth and enrolment in the first grade of the Elementary School:

  1. Application with the required supporting documents to the Regional Citizenship Directorate
  2. Examination of the file by the Directorate
  3. Publication of the decision for granting citizenship
  4. Registration in the Population Register of the municipality of residence after notification of the registration order (for males, the registration in the register of males of the decentralized administration precedes)

Citizenship due to Greek school attendance:

  1. Certificate of successful attendance (9 or 6 grades) from the Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education.
  2. Application with the required supporting documents to the Regional Citizenship Directorate
  3. Examination of the file by the Directorate
  4. Publication of the decision for granting citizenship
  5. Registration in the Population Register of the municipality of residence after notification of the registration order (for males, the registration in the register of males of the decentralized administration precedes)
  6. Greek identity card from the Police Department

Citizenship due to study (high school diploma + university / TEI degree):

  1. Application with the required supporting documents to the Regional Citizenship Directorate
  2. Examination of the file by the Directorate
  3. Publication of the decision for granting citizenship
  4. Registration in the Population Register of the municipality of residence after notification of the registration order (for males, the registration in the register of males of the decentralized administration precedes)
  5. Greek identity card from the Police Department

Naturalization of foreigners

  1. Exams for obtaining the Certificate of Knowledge Adequacy for Naturalization (PEGP)
  2. Application with the required supporting documents to the Regional Citizenship Directorate
  3. Examination of the file by the Directorate
  4. Publication of the decision for granting citizenship
  5. Call for swearing in at the Citizenship Directorate
  6. Registration in the Population Register of the municipality of residence after notification of the registration order (for males, the registration in the register of males of the decentralized administration precedes)
  7. Greek identity card from the Police Department
